Campaign – Chapter 14
Campaign manager Katrina “Kate” Kindling is striving against all odds to get Senator Marcia Brute into the White House.
Chapter Fourteen – Speech
Republican Presidential nominee Tony Flowers is speaking at an outdoor rally in Louisiana as his staffers look on from the rear of the engagement.
“I have always admired our local law enforcement. The way their badges glint in the sunlight. The way their eyes light up when they spy a perp. The noise their guns make when emptying a round into an unarmed but possibly dangerous and suspicious individual. In a way, you might say I…love local law enforcement.”
The crowd applauds tepidly in quiet confusion as speechwriter Roscoe Jones winks at his ex-girlfriend and Flowers ’16 campaign social media coordinator Emily Foxxx, who frowns back in return.
Mob henchmen and Brute campaign volunteers Ricky Faulk & Harry Schette are punching and kicking an uncooperative copier when campaign manager Katrina Kindling strolls out of her office.
“You fellas need a hand?”
“We got it, ma’am,” Schette replies gruffly. “She just needs the ‘ol once over.”
Kate glances up at a television airing an ad for her fiancee’s Fox News program The Straight Poop with Derrick Derrickson. “There’s Foster Vincent, fresh out of his coma and giving his first television interview tomorrow night. Probably going to allege my boss tried to have him killed back in the 90’s.” Kindling shakes her head. “Someone should really give him the ‘ol once over.”
Kate heads back into her office as Faulk & Schette exchange a glance.
Roscoe has inched over next to Emily as Flowers wraps up his speech.
“Yes, I love local law enforcement so much I would like to…” Flowers squints at his teleprompter. “…marry local law enforcement?” Flowers mutters to a cop just off stage. “That can’t be right.”
The cop shrugs uncomf0rtably.
“Don’t you get it?” Roscoe prods. “That speech was about you, Emily. You’re local law enforcement.”
Emily nods, still not quite getting it.
