Y2K: It’s Already Too Late is computer manual author Jason Kelly’s first delving into the world of fiction, written in 1998. In this novel, Mark Solvang heads Solvang Solutions–a multinational Y2K protection software company faced with the heady task of saving the world from certain destruction. Intrigue! Action! Computers! The following are excerpts from my new favorite book of all-time…

Volume Nine

Two deep creases cut down his cheeks to the corners of his mouth, like levers to control the operation of his jaw.

~~~
Mark’s throat went dry as he read the note from Nikolaas Groen.
~~~

As an S2 manager, she was mildly useful to Schwager. As Mark’s lover, she was a much more powerful playing piece.

~~~
Susan recognized a coordinated matrix process occurring in front of her.
~~~

Susan caught Nikolaas Groen’s eye. She tried to mouth the word “hack,” but it can’t be recognized without sound. It just looks like a mouth opening and closing.

~~~
A password prompt for batched email made no sense at all.
~~~

Thank God for newbies, Susan thought.

~~~
Jeremiah got on the line and reaffirmed that he didn’t enjoy using the “outhole,” as Grandpa had come to call it.
~~~

“Funny you should mention teaching the Japanese. Remember the way we really taught them?”

“Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I suppose.”

~~~
“What are they up to?” Mark asked anybody.
~~~

“Tell this Solvang to come in person or you will kill his family. Very old trick. Very simple.”

~~~
“Unbelievable!” Pritchett screamed in the conference room. “Sabotage across the entire military.”
~~~

“It’s not a true silver bullet,” Pritchett said.

“Nothing ever is,” Kleewein told him.

~~~
Men in heavy glasses peered at readouts, then shook their heads in frustration.
~~~

“Less than perfect? I don’t think you understand. You don’t tell somebody that they’re jumping out of a plane with a parachute that won’t open, then offer them a plain backpack with the explanation that you realize it’s less than perfect. Yeah, it’s less than perfect.”

~~~
They must have forced Susan to show her reader.
~~~

“I know that we need all the modern conveniences and zip zip, beep beep gadgets that make the world go ’round.”

~~~
Klepac’s group leapt over wooden fences to get into Grandpa Solvang’s back yard.
~~~

“This can’t be right. He’s probably just injured. Have them check him again. He’s a fighter. He wouldn’t die from a gunshot wound. Check again.”

~~~
“The children were kidnapped?” Mark screeched. He leapt from the chair at Hartmire. “You stupid idiots!”
~~~

“I can’t stand this!” Mark yelled. He jumped around, tearing at his clothing, pulling his hair. “What the hell was I thinking?” he screamed. “How stupid of me! My family should have been brought here the instant we arrived. How stupid of us all!”

~~~
“I need to take care of my children,” he said ferociously.
~~~

MORE TO COME!
