Y2K: It’s Already Too Late is computer manual author Jason Kelly’s first delving into the world of fiction, written in 1998. In this novel, Mark Solvang heads Solvang Solutions–a multinational Y2K protection software company faced with the heady task of saving the world from certain destruction. Intrigue! Action! Computers! The following are excerpts from my new favorite book of all-time…

Volume Eight

He felt the seat of a chair. Still warm.

“Why would the military kill its own people? It wouldn’t.”

~~~
“Klepac, this is Hartmire,” he spoke into his lapel.
~~~

“The bigshots are critical to everything,” Lauer thought aloud.

~~~
“No problem of noise.”
“There’d be a problem of smell.”
~~~

Hartmire thought a second. “I would lock them in the diesel supply room.”

“Yes,” Lauer concluded at the same instant. The guards both nodded. “It’s noisy there and it smells like diesel.”

~~~
The six bodies lay on top of each other like members of a rabbit warren.
~~~

The hostiles fired from around the corner. The guard fell to the floor, blood pouring from his forehead. He never made a sound.

“Oh no,” Lauer said.

~~~
“They have earpieces!” he yelled into his lapel.
~~~

Mark vomited in the bed of the pickup.

~~~
“Rockets.” Elwell paused. “I’ll work that into the equation.”
~~~

“They’ll think we’re trying to lose them,” Hartmire told Klepac and Lauer. “This is a smart plan.”

~~~
“Who are these men?”
“I don’t know.”
“Are they U.S. military?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do you have any idea what’s going on here?”
“No.”
“All right, back to the truck.”
~~~

“My whole organization is in limbo and I’m stuck in east San Jose.” He looked at the darkening sky.

~~~
The saliva drained from Pritchett’s mouth.
~~~

“My God,” Pritchett gasped. His eyes fused to the hull of the Luhu destroyer. “China is invading.”

~~~
She sat at the side of the table, holding his rough-knuckled hands. “These are lonely times, aren’t they?”
~~~

“He might save the country, but he’s sacrificing his family to do it.”

~~~
“Their Dad’s been gone for a week. If something happens to you, the only thing they’ve got is me. And I snore!”
~~~

G2G meant “got to go.” Abbreviated that way it meant she had to go immediately.
