Volume Five

Its tiny landing gear flew in all directions like children’s toys.

The smell of vomit and blood and jet fuel overwhelmed them. An arm hung from a cargo bin.

~~~

Their faces could have made the cover of Newsweek during a war.

~~~

“Slower! Slower!” the men started yelling. “Come on, you!” Slow that sucker down! Stop! Pull back! Easy, baby!”

Blink, beam, blink, blink. Beam, beam, beam. Beam. Blink, blink, blink.

~~~

After extremely tense moments, he got tears in his eyes. They weren’t crying tears, just moisture he couldn’t control.

An old Mexican woman came out of nowhere with warpaint on her face and a spear in her hand.

“Bad guys, like vampires, slow down in sunlight.”

~~~

“Are we still in the United States? Where are my capabilities?”

~~~

Something was really fucking wrong here.

~~~

“Holy shit,” Danielle said, pressed against the glass.

“Normally, I’d reprimand you,” Gary said. “But on this occasion I have to agree. Holy shit.”

The whole grocery store scene tensed his jaw muscles.

~~~

If candles would lift their spirits, candles they would get.

~~~

Every man’s cheeks and chin were covered in raggedy stubble. Greasy heads framed angry faces.

“I’m glad you’ve got your mother’s brains.”

~~~

“Ugh,” she said to Danielle. “I hate Orange Crush.”

Danielle nodded.
